Inflow and Exfiltration Studies
Monitoring the amount of Inflow and Infiltration (I/I) of water entering a sanitary system and causing SSOs or artificially maxing out treatment plant capacity.
Service Overview
Inflow and Infiltration (I/I) studies are an essential part of assessing a municipal or private sewer system’s integrity, and often serve as the starting point for real progress in regulatory compliance. EWSG has extensive experience and expertise in I/I studies and has successfully completed more than 20 large-scale studies for clients, in the last several years alone.
Problem
Sanitary collection systems are intended to gather and transport wastewater to a central treatment plant, which is designed and built to accommodate a reasonable amount of volume for its location. Ideally, wastewater is all that’s in the system’s pipes and other assets. However, in real life, many of those pipes are compromised by cracks through which tree roots enter, followed by clear groundwater after a rain event.
Result
The data that result from an I/I study form a factual basis, rather than a best guess theory, upon which to make decisions about how to eliminate water entering the system when it doesn’t require treatment and only burdens sometimes already-stressed WWTPs. Such empirically measured data allow realistic budgeting of manpower, equipment, time and money resources in a planned manner that makes the most sense for each authority responsible for efficient, cost-effective sanitary systems.
