Excavated Point Repairs
Traditional excavated point repairs are called for when there are only one or two pipe defects but they are significant enough to need to be dug out and replaced.
Service Overview
EWSG is currently contracted to perform point repairs for more than a dozen municipal clients. In 2018 alone, EWSG performed more than 250 open cut repairs in defective storm and wastewater lines and has three full-time crews dedicated to open cut work. Our experienced crews routinely perform point repairs at depths beyond 20 feet, and perform well point, by-pass, and other support activities for repairs below the water table.
Problem
Examples of situations that lend themselves particularly well to excavated point repairs are when significant defects are found in preparation for a full lining job, such as a pipeline offset or a stubborn metal tap that can’t be cut out. These must be fixed before the larger lining can take place.
Result
Rehabilitated assets return to their full functionality and flow capacity, without large resource expenditures and only limited surface disruption. The aforementioned pipes are returned to correct elevation, grade and alignment. If a full pipe lining job is called for, the repaired pipe is now ready to accept the liner without issue.
Tools and Methods
Once a defect has been identified, excavated point repairs are a quick, relatively easy fix. They don't require much equipment, generally only an excavator, a dump truck and a few operators and flaggers to get on site, dig down fast, and make a small repair to solve something that could become a larger problem. Though this method does cause some surface disruption, it doesn’t require as much planning and equipment as a trenchless point repair, so is a good, low-tech fix in areas where traffic disruption isn’t critical.
