Summary
The City of Monroe, NC, issued a bid for their municipal wastewater treatment plant to have five aeration basins cleaned and 1500 flow membranes to be installed at their facility, as part of their five-year scheduled preventative maintenance program. The aeration basins had approximately 1.5 feet of grit/sludge to be removed and applied to the drying beds located at the facility.
Problem
The City of Monroe preventative maintenance program schedule was coming due, and EWSG’s IVAC/KRG industrial cleaning division inquired through bid for 1.5 feet of grit/sludge debris to be removed from their waste treatment plant aeration basins. There was an additional special request to replace 1500 directional flow membranes, supplied by the City, throughout the basin flooring.
Solution
The City of Monroe dewatered the basins in preparation for the grit/sludge removal. Due to flow conditions, each basin would only allow 15 days for completion. Through coordination and utilization of our fleet, crews were able to overcome several rain events and meet deadline restrictions for each basin, to total 2.5-3 months.
IVAC/KRG Utility coordinated numerous crews to work simultaneously on installation of flow membranes, while other crews focused on the sludge removal from each basin, using a combination vacuum truck.
The project scoped work included labor and material required for removal of grit from the five aeration basins, after they were dewatered by city staff. We then transported the material for disposal to the wastewater treatment plants drying beds, in accordance with the Special Conditions and Contract Documents.
Result
The City of Monroe wastewater treatment tank cleaning project was completed without any major setbacks to the plant’s daily operations. Simultaneous scheduling allowed our operational staff to complete the project within the City’s time frame deadlines and budget constraints. This ensured that the wastewater treatment plant had no NPDES-permitted compliance issues throughout the grit/sludge removal and membrane replacement processes. This specific tank project led to several other successful projects with the City of Monroe, which stated that they will continue to use our services in the future..
