CCTV Inspection
Sewer and storm drain inspection is one of our core services, supporting our clients’ need to know the actual physical condition of their system infrastructure, so they can make data-based decisions about maintenance, repair and expansion.
Service Overview
We help you ensure that all your sewer and stormwater systems’ pipes, culverts, lift stations and other structures are operating at peak performance through recorded visual inspections and data reports of actual physical condition.
Problem
Stormwater and sewer pipes comprise hostile physical environments, filled with water and waste that create friction, and corrosive gases such as H2S that punish their inner structure and surfaces all day, every day. Along with the presence of grit and debris, this tough environment can cause surface abrasion and deterioration that can lead to breakdown of the structure’s integrity. Invading tree roots, hydrostatic loading, pressure and seismic movement outside the structure can cause stress fractures that
allow stormwater intrusion into sanitary systems that often leads to SSOs and treatment capacity overwhelm. These are some of the most common, expensive problems challenging any municipality or treatment facility.
Solution
Our experienced, knowledgeable technicians televise and record visual inspections, which reveal areas of debris buildup that may be masking pipe defects or missing manhole covers allowing surface water into a supposedly closed sewer system (inflow & infiltration, or I/I), forcing the treatment plant to waste valuable resources on cleaning essentially clean water.
This material can also cover up buckled or deteriorating pipe bellies, unintentional holes from side-boring utility
work, and all manner of other punctures and breaks that may need cleaning and repair to minimize I/I so that treatment plants don’t have to work so hard. Usually, cleaning will happen before inspection, so remote cameras can best show real conditions inside the pipes. Landscaping features and stormwater structures on golf courses, around factories, commercial and private properties, and construction job sites all need to be inspected regularly.
Result
Having a current, accurate overview of the actual physical condition of your stormwater and sanitary conveyance assets allows decision makers to logically prioritize needed repairs and rehabilitation to return these systems to optimal performance. This saves money in the long run, by delaying or even eliminating the need for treatment plant expansion or replacement, not to mention the cost of insurance claims from storm-related flooding.
Tools and Methods
Pipeline inspection uses remote-operated, vehicle-mounted CCTV cameras, hardened for rough handling, with bright LED lights, and cables to control steering, speed and to retrieve them if they get stuck.
Large-diameter, NASSCO-regulated pipes require a separate crawler or tractor that can carry the remote inspection camera to the horizontal middle, and vertically halfway up these pipes, to visually reveal all their nooks and crannies.
These tools are deployed either on fully outfitted inspection vans or trucks for easily accessible locations, or via a smaller, more agile easement rig for harder-to-reach areas or narrow pavement or median areas for safety.
